Google recently published a list with the top 1000 most visited web sites in the world. We found that list very interesting and decided to take a closer look at them.
These are stats we took:
- Web servers in use
- Programming language in use
- Sites using WordPress
- Sites using Jquery
- Sites using Google Adsense
- Sites using Google Analytics
- Sites that doesn’t work without the www
- Sites using China Cache
A few of these numbers really amazed us. Nginx, for example, was used in 15% of the sites, very close to IIS with only 17%. Jquery is being used in almost 30% of the top sites and 42% are using Google analytics.
As far as their language of choice, 15% of the sites are powered by PHP and less than 1% use WordPress. Also, it was very strange to see that iminent.com (#489) is still using WordPress 2.7, which has many known security vulnerabilities.

The "sites that don't work" do work, just not as you tried to access them. linksynergy.com for example is the top level domain for all LinkShare affiliate links, the largest affiliate network with over 10 million merchants.

You mentioned that less than 1% use WordPress. What CMS systems do they use? (Joomla, Drupal, etc)?
About.com uses WordPress, but not for all pages.
I too would like to know what percentage are running on what cms… nice work.
I am not sure if your lists are intended to be exhaustive before/after the elipsis, but if so, then you missed many sites that use AdSense. Just in the top 100, you should add:

As a blog user, For the Dogs, NH, out of Hampton, NH, I am shocked that wordpress.com was even listed as a potential problem site. My above blog has tons of followers and I have never had any issues with security breech etc. Thanks though for a compelling overview. I will look into it more fully. I don't want my dog walking, dog day care blog to cause problems for any of my readers. Thank you.
So are these statistics the cause of the success of these sites, or simply something successful sites share? I'm not sure what you're getting at.
