A few weeks back we reported on very large Layer 7 DDOS attacks within the WordPress ecosystem. Today we decided to provide you a little illustration of what that looks like.
Remember, there is a big difference between Brute Force and Denial of Service attacks. This is specifically a large DDOS attack involving over 40,000 WordPress sites.

Nice video! I cant help but notice the sheer volume of outdated WordPress installs. But that is not surprising as there are still under 0.1% using WordPress version 1 and 1.4% using version 2. With version 3, there are more sites using outdated versions than there are using the latest version. A regular update schedule should be a rule within any business.
However, having said that, I doubt it was an outdated wordpress version alone that caused them to become infected. Sadly people and businesses focus on the bottom line which is price. They want to pay as little as possible because they do not understand the differences in security between the cheapest and something better.
When it comes to websites, it is a never ending learning process and we try to educate our customers as much as we can.
